History |
Blackwell receives an entry in the Doomsday
book of 1085 showing that there was a Lord of the manor, 13 Villians,
4 Borders with ploughs, 7 acres of meadow, 1 wood and 1 priest with border.
Whether the villiens were the first football team in the village was not
recorded. The meaning of Blackwell is attributed to a ‘Dark Spring’
and is believed to be a spring on the hill known as ‘Sinai’
opposite the church. As coal deposits are close to the surface in that
area it may well be they coloured the water to a dark appearance.
The community was served by the mining industry throughout the 1800’s.
The community expanded around this time and records from the Derbyshire
Times show that organised football took place in the village even around
this era. Without the distractions of television, sport was a major
interest for all the villagers. In 1900 the present sports ground wasd and Rugby and cricket was played. Football matches tended to
be played on other pitches in the village. The cricket ground has staged
many important games during its history & holds the world record
for the 9th wicket stand, 283 Derbyshire v Warwickshire in 1910. The
village produced many good ‘home-grown’ teams and everyone
turned out to see family, friends and work-mates in action. One record
from a treasurers account showed an entry for one game of £40
gate money @ sixpence each, equating to 1600 paying customers. Teams
around the early to middle of the century competed in the Ripley and
District leagues.
In the early 50’s the team moved to the Notts. Alliance and
enjoyed instant success when they finished runners-up to a very strong
Gedling Colliery side who dominated local football at that time. The
following 2 seasons saw them finish 3rd and in 1954/55 the team won
the Notts Alliance Championship and finished runners-up to Boots Athletic
in the Senior Cup, losing 6-3 in front of 6,000 people at Meadow Lane.
They returned to the Ripley league in the late 50’s and then had
a brief spell in the East Midlands League before joining the Sutton
& Skegby League in the early 60’s. During that time they enjoyed
more success, winning the Stamper Cup. The club disbanded in 1972 but
reformed in 1974 winning the Sutton & Skegby Division ‘C’
title followed by Section ‘A’ runners-up in 1975/76 &
82/83, Premier division runners-up in 1977-78. Section ‘A’
Cup was won in 1976/77 and this year began the return of the clubs proud
record in Derbyshire County F.A. competitions. The Junior Cup just eluded
them that season but it was returned in 1978 / 83 / 84, with the Divisional
Cup being won in 1986.
In 1984-85 the club moved into the Central Midlands Football League
and became Senior division champions and Cup winners. The club continued
to occupy the top half of the tables during the late 80’s, but
in the 1990’s the club struggled at the wrong end of the table,
finishing bottom or second bottom on 3 occasions. Despite this downfall
in circumstances the club kept going and at the beginning of 1998, the
present committee came together to try to revive the fortunes of the
club. In season 1998-99 the club achieved fifth spot and were offered
the opportunity to play in the Supreme division for the first time.
This offer was accepted and although the club finish bottom in the 1999/2000
season they retained Supreme status. In 2000/01 they finished next bottom
and were relegated.
Despite this set back the club remained positive and a new manager
was installed for season 2001-2002. Trevor Hammond, previously at Shardlow
St. James took the helm, and with floodlights installed during the season,
promotion back to the Supreme division was achieved with the club also
enjoying excellent runs in the cup competitions, bowing out to Shirebrook
Town in the Floodlit semi-finals. In 2002/3 they played in the FA Vase
for the 1st time and enjoyed more cup success, getting to the league
cup semi-final before bowing out to Dunkirk after extra time. However
the club finished 2nd bottom but were saved from relegation. Graham
Brentnall has returned to the manager’s chair to try and keep
the clubs Supreme status with a very young squad of mainly local players.
For the record at the start of the clubs 21st CMFL season in 04/05 the
club had played 650 league games which is more than any other club has
achieved. The clubd a Web site in November 2000 & now all
our news can be read on the Internet www.blackwellmwfc.org.uk

BLACKWELL MINERS WELFARE F.C.
PEN PICTURES SEASON 2004 – 2005
RICHARD PARKER Goalkeeper (23) Second
season at the club after joining from Teversal where he made such an impact.
Very committed player with great attitude. Brought a lot of discipline to the
team both in the changing room and on the park. Can also play up front and likes
scoring goals.
ALAN JEPSON Defender (25) Will be starting
his 4th season and now a veteran at the club with over 100 games for the club.
This popular defender has twice been voted players player and can always be
relied on to give 100%
GARETH BALLY Striker (22) New signing
at the club this season after spending a few seasons at Staveley MW. Comes with
a good pedigree for scoring goals and will give us the extra edge up front that
has been missing. Strong, skilful, comfortable on the ball and an exciting burst
of pace to get past defenders.
JAMIE RENSHAW Left Back (19) Another
exciting signing for the club this season. Has a lot to live up to in filling
the position vacated by Steve Garrard but we have every confidence that he will
serve us well. Excellent defender and will gradually gain the confidence to
terrorise defences with his attacking instincts.
CRAIG RODGERS (23) Craig has been at
the club for a couple of seasons now and is a popular character around the place.
Great shot stopper who needs to work hard to move up to the next level.
RYAN WALL Defender (23) The club captain
and veteran of the team. Starting his 7th season with over 130 appearances for
the club despite his injuries. His presence installs confidence and re-assurance
to the many youngsters around him. Reads the game so well at the back. Ex Notts
County apprentice.
GARY MAYHEW Defender (21) Another jewel
who oozes self confidence and has the right temperament. Tackles as clean as
a whistle, has pace, intelligence and awareness, which makes him a perfect partner
for Ryan at the back. Pleads with the manager to play up front and has done
well when employed in that position.
SIMON POOLE Midfield (22) SID has signed
for us this season from the Chesterfield area and will be looking to force his
presence on the team. Impressed during pre-season and will give us attacking
options on either flank. Strong runner with speed and good motor to operate
at both ends of the park.
SHANE TILLEY Defender (34) A recent signing
who has brought a degree of solidity to the defence. Vastly experienced at local
level, Shane has grabbed the opportunity and is enjoying his spell with the
club. Scored on his home debut against Sandiacre Town in the Floodlit cup.
TOM CRAWFORD Attacker / Midfield (21)
Clown, Joker, Introvert? Who knows how to describe Tom, but he can turn a game
for you and will always have a smile on his face. Not the quickest about but
his speed of thought overcomes that part of his game. After a few years of settling
in will be looking to step up a level.
LEE NAUGHTON Attacker (17) Another 17
year old in our 1st team squad who learnt his trade with Chesterfield and Sheffield
United. Operates down the left flank to great effect and will work at both ends
of the park. Will go far if his progress and application continue has it has
so far.
MARK DOWNING Midfield/Attacker (24) Mark
is another of the loyal players to be at the club and will be starting his 6th
season with 66 goals from 176 appearances for the club. Has improved as a player
every season and can become a goalscoring legend in the Riley, Brentnall mould
if his fitness allows it. Bad injury last season and will be looking to make
up for lost time.
PAUL GARRARD Defender (21) Solid, no
nonsense defender who can be relied on whenever asked. Outstanding for the reserves
where he was captain and grabbed his chance in the first team last season where
he played 28 times. Club man through and through and will continue to learn
and become very experienced at this level.
ASHLEY BURBEARY Attacker (17) Released
by Sheffield United, last season as a 16 year old he made a debut against Prims
as a 2nd half sub and was quickly installed into the next game against Dinnington,
were he more than held his own. Could be a great asset if we can hang onto him.
STEVE D’ARCY Utility (26) Another
player who can be relied on when on the park. Will fit into any role asked but
prefers to play nearer to the opposition keeper than his own. Had his share
of injuries in the past and is looking forward to stamp his mark in the senior
team this term. Ex Selston.
TOM NORRIS Midfield (18) Great things
expected from this lad who was Derbyshire schools captain and made an impact
with us last season. Suffered though with ankle problems but will be looking
to pick up where he left off. Intelligent player with good engine and bags of
energy. Runs marathons for fun.
ADAM NORRIS Attacker (19) Tom’s
brother also joined us last year and struggled to score goals in our struggling
team, but we know the potential is there as he scored goals for fun for Matlock
Under 19’s. Matlock are keeping tabs on him while we offer him a chance
to develop further. One for the future as well.
MATT EATON Midfield (18) New to the squad
this season, Matt has had a good apprenticeship in his football training and
we expect Mat to for an exciting partnership with Garren in the midfield that
will reap loads of goals. Strong, quick and picks out a good pass under pressure.
NATHAN JUNOR Attacker (17) Nat was released
by Leeds United last season as a 16 year old and we hope he can also provide
some much needed goals to the team. Still growing he will learn and develop
into an excellent prospect for the future.
DANNY WATSON Attacker (21) Another new
signing for the squad who has gained valuable experience at Heanor and Borrowash
and has been brought in as a target man to create the goals for our exciting
youngsters. That’s the theory but Danny will weigh in with a few of his
own.
GRAHAM BRENTNALL General Manager Graham
returns to first team management after stepping down 3 seasons ago. Ran the
reserves last season and those lads are starting to blossom. Clubman through
and through, was a stylish forward for the club in the 80’s and played
at higher levels with Belper and Alfreton.
KEVIN JACKSON Assistant Manager Kevin
has rejoined the club for his second stint and will bring much needed assistance
to Graham. Has been at Heanor Town, Swanwick and Borrowash while away from us
and we are glad to have him back on board.
