Club
History |
The Club was formed in 1919 at the same
time as the Notts Alliance resumed playing football after the First World
War. In their first season they finished third in the League and won the
League Cup defeating Sneinton – now Carlton F.C. At the end of the
1929 – 30 season, the club changed its name and became known as
Mapperley St Judes and enjoyed moderate success during this period. During
the Second World War they reformed as Gedling Miners. Welfare FC and with
the restart of Football for the 1945-46 season they went on to win the
Notts Alliance League and the Notts Senior Cup. This success was repeated
on numerous occasions and this success spilled over into the 1950’s,
which was the most successful period for the club.In the FA Amateur Cup
they entertained two of the top sides of the day. Pegasus were the visitors
to Plains Road in 1954 and temporary stands were erected all round the
ground to house a crowd of 7000 plus. Two seasons later Bishop Auckland
visited and the Police put a limit of 10000 on the gate! We saw Gedling
lose 1-4 to the best amateur side in the country, having missed a penalty
at a crucial time of play. The Bishops had six Amateur internationals
on show. These were good times at Plains Road, and unfortunately the Club
have not had the same degree of success since then, but most recently
under the guidance of Vic Hulme, Gedling won Division 2 Notts Alliance
Intermediate Cup and were semi finalists to Retford United in the Notts
FA County Cup. Vic has now stepped aside as Manager and has taken up the
post of Chairman of the Club. This left the wayfor the appointment
of Duncan Broad and Mark Allison as the management team for the start
of the 2002-03 season. |

PLAYER PROFILES by Manager, Mark Allison
Darren Wright, Goalkeeper - Signed from Stavely last season.
Ex-Arnold and Gedling Town Keeper. In his mid-thirties and gets better with
age. Possibly the best keeper in our league. A great all-round game.
Peter Shaw, Defender - Joker in the pack! Never a dull
moment when Peter's around. Good solid defender, great talker and never gives
less than 110%. Previous clubs include Greenwood Meadows and Gedling Town
.Gary Wright, Defender - One of our best players, big
and strong, good in the air and very, very quick. Also comfortable on the ball.
Gary could easily play at a higher level.
Jason Booth, Midfield/Defender - Club Captain and leads
by example, Good in the air and the best tackler I've come across in non-league
football. Manager's dream - always gives 100%.
Matt Nowak, Striker - Top scorer for the last four seasons.
Scored 48 goals when winning the Notts Alliance Division 2 in 2000/2001. Quickest
player in the squad - frightens defenders with his pace.
Carl Wilson, Striker - Finished three seasons as second
top scorer. He has had some injury problems last season. Bags of skill for a
big lad and averages a goal every other game.
Stuart Parker, Midfield - Didn't play too many games last
season due to an ankle operation. Quiet lad but fantastic defender and good
in the air.
Scott Wesby, Midfield - Oldest player in the team. Back
to his best after a recent cartilage operation. Has bags of skill, great header
of the ball and second top scorer from midfield.
Martin Smith, Midfield/Striker- Youngest player in the
squad. Signed from Carlton Town. Great tackler and fantastic engine. Pops up
with some very important goals.
Grant Russell, Striker - Came to us from Carlton Town
with brother, Neil. Good in the air and leads the front line. Never lets the
centre half settle. Lack of goals only due to some fantastic displays in our
back four.
Neil Russel, Defender - As mentioned, signed from Carlton
Town. Left-sided player with a sweet left foot. Strong in the tackle and has
an excellent long throw. Good all-round player. Travels 150 miles round trip
just to play!
Phil McGinty, Midfield,Defender/Striker - Back to his
best after breaking his leg a few seasons ago. Phil can play anywhere and never
lets you down - even known to play in goal. Another player with a long throw
- perhaps one of the longest throws ever seen.
Chris Bovey, Midfield - The fittest player in the squad
- he used to run for Great Britain. Joined last season from Newark.
Paul McCaughey, Midfield, Defender, Striker- ex Gedling
Town and Carlton Town. Takes all set plays, free kicks, corner kicks and penalties.
Very fit and a good all round player.
Graham Epps, Striker, - Prolific goal scorer signed from
Blackstone in the close season. Thirty goals a season guaranteed, excellent
centre forward
Neil Curtis, Midfield - Signed from Carlton Town in the
summer, great passer, very rarely gives the ball away, good intelligent all-round
player.
Gary Chulan, Striker - Vastly experienced player, big
strong and very fast, a handful for any centre-half, previous Club's include
Dunkirk and Carlton Town
Kev Walker, Midfield/Striker - picked up from Notts Sunday
League where a host of clubs had been watching him. Very versatile player with
great skill.
Chris Hudson - Centre half ex Gedling and Arnold Town
Captain. Very tough in the tackle. Fantastic header of the ball. Surely one
of the best centre half's in Nottingham
Carl Steggles, Goalkeeper - Signed on as cover for Darren
Wright. Vastly experienced player, very successful at amateur level. Supposed
to be retired but never lets you down when needed.
