Club History

Founded in the summer of 2003 Grimsby Borough F.C. are affiliated to the Lincolnshire F.A. and are members of the Lincolnshire Football League, the club was created when Louth United withdrew from all competitions for one season on the 17th July 2003. (Louth United returned to Lincolnshire League Football season 2004 / 05)

With no competition in which to compete and no base, five members of back room staff along with the same management team of Steve Newby and Nigel Fanthorpe, and more importantly most of the original playing staff formed a working committee, with the sole aim of ensuring amateur football continued in the area.

The seven man team faced a good deal of hard work and the difficult tasks of finding a ground to play on and a league which would accept them at such short notice. With constant backing from the Lincolnshire F.A, the Lincolnshire Football League and its members, those tasks were all completed by Tuesday 2nd September 2003. Approval for the clubs name and badge was granted by the council and Grimsby Borough Football Club was born, ensuring an opportunity for all the local youngsters and senior players in the area to progress and play football at a good amateur level.

Following in the footsteps of famous local teams such as Drewery Sports, Grimsby Amateurs, Immingham Town, Immingham BRSA and Ross Sports.

For season 2003 / 2004 Grimsby Borough fielded one team in the Lincolnshire Echo Lincolnshire Football League, however due to the success of the team (finishing second and achieving promotion) combined with work of the committee. Borough are able to field two teams for the season 2004 / 2005 competing in the Abacus Lighting Central Midlands Football League Premier Division and the Lincolnshire Echo Lincolnshire Football league.

Clubs Pen Pics

Mike Butterwood – Goalkeeper - Mikes first season with the club has been very impressive so far. All you want and would expect from a keeper who was formally with Leeds United youth side. A great signing.

Pete Taylor – Defender – Very determined, fit and has started this season with great enthusiasm. ‘Tay’ has shown the ability to play well in both defensive and attacking roles.

John Toyne – Defender – The clubs “Teenage Grandad” John keeps giving the consistent performances that give the management great balance on the left hand side of the field.
Jon Teanby – Defender – ‘Teano’ looks to be going all out to make this season his best yet. As really got his game going and as all the ability to become a major player for Borough. Jon is also the County Trampolining Champion. Formally a Grimsby Town Y.T.S. player.

Kev Short – Defender – Kev was so excited about coming to CML he almost raised one eyebrow. He brings a wealth of experience to the hearty of the defence.
Ryan Scott – Midfield - It might take up to December for “Scotty” to get fit after a bad knee injury in August, but his early season form has shown he will be a great asset to us. Former GTFC youth team player.

Wil Boulton – Midfield – After coming back from the USA this big guy has grabbed his opportunity at the club. His enthusiasm and ability have made him a popular and important player for Grimsby Borough. Wil’s other great love outside football is bird watching.

Dave Unsworth – Midfield – Dave’s ability to play in several different positions as made him a very valuable member of the team. - After having a knee injury that plagued him for a season we will now begin to see the best of “Eli”.

John Gaughan – Midfield – Good passer – great engine – “Paddy” has made a great start to the season and has the determination to made himself a permanent place in the CML squad.

Matty Hall – Midfield/forward – Soon to become a dad, “Flopsy” will be looking to last seasons low key performances behind him. He as set his standards very high but as the Ability and enthusiasm to reach his goals.

Jack Stevens – Midfield/forward – “keep ball” are the two words that go with big Jack, he just never seems to give the ball away and usually finds the time to produce a good pass. When the team needs his ability he always produces the goods. Former GTFC Youth player.

Daly Snell - Midfield – “Dayo’s” performances speak for themselves. He is getting stronger and can produce passing and movement to unlock defences. Former GTFC youth player.

Micky Steer – midfield/forward – A player who needs to put down his roots and make Borough his club. Most would say he as all the natural talent you could want in a centre midfield. Could and should be “Steero’s” year. Former Hull City youth team.

Lewis Buckthorpe - Midfield – Dogged by injury early in the season, but once fit will be a major player for us. “Goal scoring midfield player required” – look no further! (Former Leeds United junior).

Danny Pawson – Midfield/forward – Only plays one way and that’s to win. Danny won’t take a step backwards, always pushing the team on. A very determined footballer.

Chris Snell – Forward – “The running Man”- Non stop all action, an absolute nightmare for defenders (including his own). “Snelly” is now beginning to believe in himself and the only way is up.

Chris Grocock – Forward – “The Skipper” – won everything, knows everyone> Although being a former pro footballer and top non-league player Chris still shows all the “tricks”. His confidence and presence are great assets to the club.

Mike King – Forward – “Fish” is now becoming the player he always showed the promise to be. Has become much stronger and this, matched with his all round football ability and eye for goals should make this a big season for him.

Lee Stephenson – Forward – Could be ‘the’ signing in the short history of our club. Scores for fun, played at a very good level of non league football after being released by Grimsby Town. Lee as promised if he gets to 30 goals he’s coming out for a pint.

Mark Carroll – Forward – “Cazza’s” “learning Curve” has continued with great performances in the Lincs League side. Good hold-up forward with a great turn of pace, will become another top striker at the club

Richard Creer – Forward – Rick as just had a year out of football while visiting Australia. “The Creer” will return with pace, strength and goals for Grimsby Borough!

James Swann – Goalkeeper – “Swanny” will soon be an exhibit for Grimsby Hospital having far too many niggling injuries but we all know Swanny is an excellent shot stopper for us and has shown great determination to prove himself as a dedicated Borough player.

Richard Peck – Forward – At last “Mr Angry “ as sent his twin brother to play for Borough. Rick has now shown he will be a great asset for us in either attack or defence.

Alex Tutty – Defender – “Sir Alex” fresh back from his spell in ‘Saudi’ will be looking forward to getting fit and focused and to playing a major role in the defence of the team.

Ben Allen – Defender/Forward - Can play anywhere with great determination. In defence, midfield, or attack. Gives the team presence and power whenever it is needed.
