History |
The Saturday Senior started off in the
Central Alliance League where it competed in the late 70's and early 80's.
The club then moved to the Central Midlands League but lost their place
in this League at the end of season 1989/90 due to the lack of ground
facilities.
After missing one season the Saturday side was started again in 1991/92,
merging with Lace Web United of the Midlands Regional Alliance. The
Club went on to finish runners-up in the Premier Division that season.
The following season the club was re-admitted to the Central Midlands
League and had a very successful season, winning both the Premier Division
Championship and the League Cup. The season ended with a remarkable
record of winning the last 24 League and Cup games. Unfortunately, in
the summer of 1993, the sponsor, manager, and the majority of that successful
team, moved to Shepshed Albion of the Midlands Combination with only
Captain, Ged Le Blond, and goalkeeper, Dave Buxton, remaining at Sandiacre.
In July 1993 Paul Baxter and Mick Rodgers were appointed as joint managers
with the job of rebuilding the side but other commitments forced Paul
to step down. Mick Rodgers continued as manager until the end of the
1995/96 season, his last game in charge was the Final of the League
Cup where Sandiacre went down 3-1 to Killamarsh Junior.
Geoff Barrowcliffe, the former Derby County player was appointed Manager
at the start of the 1996/97 season. However after a poor run of results
he was replaced by Ged Le Blond at the end of October. Ged returning
to Sandiacre as Player Manager after a short spell as a player at Borrowash
Victoria. In his first season in charge he led the team to the semi-finals
of the Derbys FA Senior cup losing 1-0 to Ilkeston Town in a close encounter
at St. Giles Park.
The 1997/98 season began promisingly but following the loss of key
players through injury and transfers form deteriorated and saw the team
finish next to bottom. However they did reach the First Round Proper
of the FA Vase for the first ever time by defeating West Midlands Police
away in the Second Round Qualifying 2-1, this despite conceding a goal
in theng two minutes. Unfortunately the team were put out of the
competition losing 3-0 away at Knypersley Victoria.
A mention must also be made here to superfans Nick Perkins & Kevin
Price who walked the 54 miles to the match at West Midlands Police raising
funds for the club. Nick also gets a further mention achieving national
press notoriety after walking to a league match at Grimethorpe, enduring
a night in a tent in the middle of nowhere and heavy downfalls of snow
only to here the match had been called off just miles from the ground.
For the 1998/99 season manager Ged Le Blond was joined by former Kimberley
Town manager Andy Freeman. A number of the previous seasons successful
Kimberley Town team also joined Sandiacre and despite a disappointing
end to the season a highest ever points total was easily achieved.
At the start of this 1990/200 season saw Andy Freeman taking sole control
of the senior team. Under Andy the team achieved it’s highest
ever placing in the league – 3rd, just 4 points behind winners
Lincoln Moorlands.
During the summer of 2000 Andy announced he was resigning just hours
before the league registration meeting taking the nucleus of the team
with him. ‘A’ team manager Tony Roe agreed to take over
as manager and use his squad of players who won the Reserve Division
One title. The young team struggled at the beginning of the seaon but
following the signing of a few experienced players the teams form improved
finally finishing 11 points above the relegation zone.
The start of the 2001/2002 season saw an indifferent start but a good
mid season run resulted with a final position of 11th . During the season
Tony Roe bought in Glyn Stacey as joint manager and Dave King as coach
but both soon moved on to Long Eaton. At this time goal keeper Mark
Harvey joined the club to take over the role of joint manager.
More new players were bought to the club during the 2002/2003 season
in which improvements continued as the team finished 8th, the clubs
second highest finish.
Last season 2003/04 saw the club finish 4th in the League and also
reach the Final of the Floodlit Cup and the semi Finals of the League
Cup.

Club Pen Pics
Mark Harvey – goalkeeper
– signed from Heanor Town in November 2001, an exchange that saw Paul
Wilson join the Lions. A very experienced keeper who has played at a higher
level and was previously with Louth United. Handles the ball well and is a good
shot stopper. Is joint manager with Tony Roe.
Matt Berry – defender
– has come through the Club’s youth teams and although only 21 he
is nearing 200 first team appearances. A right-sided player he is a good ball
player who likes to get forward and delivers good crosses. And he has become
a more accomplished player since he added steel to his tackling.
Andy Flindall –
defender – left sided player who joined the Club last season and previously
played for Wollaton of the Notts Alliance. Soon settled in to become a regular
in the team. He reads the game well, is quick and likes to get forward. Also
capable of scoring vital goals.
Russ Foster – defender
– a new signing this season who has had experience at Teversal. A left-sided
defender who has shown up well in pre-season. He is strong in the tackle and
also looks to play the simple game when in possession. A good crosser of the
ball.
John Dilnot - central
defender – a new signing this season he has previously played for Radford
and Clipstone Welfare. He is a strong tackling player and good talker with plenty
of experience who is looking to forge a strong central defence.
Mark Dickie – central
defender – a new signing last season he was previously with Ripley Town
and before that played for Kimberley Town. A big strong player who is very experienced
at this level. Good in the tackle and in the air he also reads the game well
and always seems to have plenty of time when on the ball.
Andy Marlow – defender
– another player to progress from the youth system and to notch over 100
first team appearances. Missed only 3 games in his debut season of 2000/01 and
was the Manager’s Player of the Season. A level-headed player who gives
consistent performances.
Dean Whiley – central
defender – signed from Kimberley Town in November 2000. A big and strong
player who has improved every season. He is good in the air and comfortable
on the ground and although primarily a central defender he can slot in anywhere
in the defence.
Tom Baker – midfield
– a recent signing from Dunkirk and a player that Tony Roe has been chasing
for some time. A very good ball player who is also good in the air. Seen as
the ideal person to provide chances for the strikers but should also score his
fair share of goals.
Nathan Mannion –
midfield – in his third season with the Club after joining from Toton
Diesel. Can slot in anywhere at the back or in midfield although he prefers
the midfield anchor role. Good on the ball and strong in the tackle and although
not a tall player he wins his fair share of balls in the air.
Danny Hale – midfield
– made his senior debut when only 15 and had trials with a number of League
clubs. Works extremely hard, has good vision and is also capable of getting
on the score sheet. Another to complete over 100 first team appearances and
was first team captain at the age of 21.
Ryan Mellors – midfield
– only 18 and another product of the Club’s youth system. Consistent
performances in the Reserves last season resulted in a deserved promotion to
the first team squad. Only slightly built but never fazed by the opposition
no matter how big or experienced. Has a tremendous work rate.
Scott Hughes – midfield
– an extremely talented player who is two-footed and possesses all the
tricks. Has been with the Club for several seasons playing in the youth sides
and in now his third season with the seniors yet only 19. Showing more aggression
in his play now that he is physically stronger.
Nick Ghislanzoni –
midfield/striker – joined the Club from Stanton Ilkeston for season 2002/03.
A highly rated player who is strong on the ball and shows plenty of aggression.
Seems to have been around a long time but only 24. Finished leading scorer in
his first season with 16 goals from 36 appearances and eclipsed that last season
when he was again leading scorer with 37 from 51 appearances.
Lee Aldred – striker
– has rejoined the Club after almost two seasons with Long Eaton United.
He has all the tricks when he has the ball at his feet and he is a prolific
goal scorer whose record for the Club stands at 55 goals from 73 appearances.
Should form a formidable partnership with Nick Ghislanzoni.
Sam Potter – striker
– joined the Club in 2002/03 and impressed with some outstanding performances
for the Reserves and deserved his promotion to the first team squad. Has a very
good first touch and also good close ball control. Before this season had made
a total of 54 appearances with 18 goals.
Dave Thompson –
striker – a Sandiacre lad he has progressed through the youth teams but
his appearances are limited because he is a student at Edinburgh University.
Always seems to have a good pre-season but then has to leave just as he is establishing
himself in the team.
