Club History
Season 2003/4 proved to be a good season for Southwell City. We set out ourselves one main achievement during season 2003/4 and that was to gain promotion into the Supreme division of the Central Midlands League. Well we did it, finishing runners up in the League and assuring promotion. It would have been nice to have won the championship but we were always just behind a very consistent Radcliffe Olympic side. Congratuations to them.

Nev Mark's Reserve squad had an equally successful season finishing runners-up having been in front for most of the season. It was Radcliffe again who won their last 4 games to pip the reserves to the top spot. So it's promotion for the Reserves aswell

The third team playing in the Notts Amateur League Division 1 finished in mid-table (6th) which was a good improvement from the previous season. Thanks must go out to the lads who turned up regularly each week, and to Frank Lawlor who managed the team for most of the season, and Dave Clark who stepped in to fill the breach when Frank resigned.

The most successful side for the club was Richard Mallison's junior side who reached the County Cup final, won the league and the league cup. They lost 1-0 in the County Cup Final at Brigg Town to Expressions. They won the league 3-0 against Rushton Sports at Lincoln United's ground and won the championship by 5 points from Grantham Town having only let in 5 goals during the league season. Four of the juniors have already played in the first team this season so the future is looking bright.

During the close season the club has worked with the Local Council to agree a number of ground improvements that have brought our ground up to the requirements for the Supreme Division. This wasn't an easy task when your ground is in a conservation area next to the historic Southwell Minister. All the improvements will be in place by 19th July ready for the new season.

On the footballing side City will be running three sides in the Central Midlands League during Season 2004-5, the 1st team in the Supreme Division, the Reserves in the Premier Reserves division, and a Colts team in the Divison 1 Reserve division.

Additionally City will be running a side in the Northern Alliance U-19 League, and an A side in the Notts Amateur Alliance League.

So it is going to be a very busy season for City with new challenges on the pitch and new challenges off the pitch.

JASON TURNER Goalkeeper New to City this season. Experienced keeper with a good track record in the Notts Alliance where he played for both Basford United and Kimberley Miners Welfare. Confident, a good talker and a desire to win.

SCOTT WARDEN Right Back Scott joined City 9 seasons ago and has been a loyal and dedicated player ever since. Strong, determined full back that only wants to win. You don’t see many opposition wingers getting to the bye line. Hardly ever misses training. Consequently is one of the fittest players in the squad.

DAN FOSTER Left Back Dan has been playing in the first team for four seasons since he was 16. First team football brought him on very quickly and consequently he found Under 18 FA Representative football well within his ability. Easily qualified for his County Cap for more than ten appearances because he played for two seasons. Unfortunately picked up a bad injury in August last year and is waiting for surgery. Hoping to be back in contention before Christmas

ALASTAIR BAIRD. Central Defender 25 year old centre half, who has been a first team regular from the age of 17. Had three seasons at Eastwood Town before returning home two seasons ago. His height sees him win most aerial battles and his anticipation and pace gets him to the source of opposition attacks quickly. Was player of the year last season.

JONATHAN SIMPSON. Central Defender Club captain for the last nine years since his return to his home club from Sneinton F C. Tough, uncompromising central defender who has never shirked his responsibility as a player or captain. Another good trainer who has worked hard to improve his control and passing skills as the team has developed under the coaching of Tony Cook. Has shown great determination pre-season to make sure he is fitter than ever for the coming campaign.

PETER CAMPBELL Midfield Peter joined City as a 16year old. Another player who had a number of years at Nottingham Forest as a boy. Peter was selected for the first team as a 17year old by Mick Heron and is now the first teams longest serving play despite only being 27 this August. Will play anywhere if it gets him a shirt, but the last three seasons has shown his value to the team in midfield and scoring consistently. Another player with his County Cap at FA Under 18 level and County Schools.

JOHN READ Midfield Another player who spent time with pro clubs as a young player. John had spells at Notts County and Lincoln City as well as representing County Schools. A midfielder with excellent close skill but with a determination to also win the ball. Was the players player last season

DONAL FLYNN Forward Donal was a young professional at Mansfield Town and then played in the League of Ireland after his release. A strong striker with perhaps the best first touch in the County. Came to City from Arnold Town and was player of the season for the for two seasons. An unfortunate back injury limited his appearances at the end of last season and he is still having treatment. We hope to have him back playing as quickly as possible

BARRY TURNER Forward/Midfield Damian is another local who came through the youth system and won his County Cap at FA Under 18’s. The club missed his services when he was away at University where he represented Northern Universities as well as Bradford University. Now 26, Damian is a very strong and deceptively quick central defender. Extremely reliable and positive member of the team. Goes into every game believing that we can win and will not stop trying until the final whistle.

DAMIAN CLOUGH Central Defender Damian is another local who came through the youth system and won his County Cap at FA Under 18’s. The club missed his services when he was away at University where he represented Northern Universities as well as Bradford University. Now 26, Damian is a very strong and deceptively quick central defender. Extremely reliable and positive member of the team. Goes into every game believing that we can win and will not stop trying until the final whistle.

AARON MOHAMMED Full Back Aaron joins us from Arnold Town. In pre-season he has shown good ability to read the game and excellent technique. He is always looking to pass the ball and make himself available for the return. A really good addition to the team.

TONY COOK. Defence/Midfield In his third and longest spell at City and as well as a key player is club coach. Tony qualified as a coach several years ago and is full time at the Nottingham Forest Academy. Tony is a large factor in the success of City in the past five years because his coaching has allowed the club to adopt an attractive adventurous style which gets results and also pleases the crowd. Accepted the responsibility of Assistant Manager last season and commands respect from his players by what he does as well as what he says.

SAM SAUNDERS Midfield Sam is starting his third season in the First Team despite being only 20 years old. Came through the youth team and Reserves and was a virtual ever present last season despite having to travel home from University. Loves his football and is expected to get better and better as he gains experience at this level. Scored 12 goals last season and would like to have had a better return. Has shown determination to get even fitter in training this pre season which will certainly help his performances early doors.

BEN SAUNDERS Forward Ben had a tremendous season last year and ended as the top goal scorer for the first team. Was unlucky to miss out on both the players player award and the managers award by 1 vote. Tall, strong and quick, Ben proved a real handful for even the most experienced defenders last season and we know that he will be setting his sights on being one of the top goal scorers again this season. A great club man and takes every effort to get back for each game from University.

DANNY PURVES Left Midfield Danny joins us from Newark Flowserve. A young quick direct left sided player who has done well in training and pre-season games. A very fit player due to his additional training in the army. Likes to attack the bye line and get good crosses into the box.

WAYNE BENNETT Striker Wayne played against us for nearly six years for Notts Police. It is no secret that we tried to get him to City at the start of the last two seasons. Wayne is working hard on his fitness so that his retiurn to the CMFL is as successful as when he played for Kimberley Town before joining the Police Force. Tony will be working him hard to try and make sure he succeeds.

MATTHEW MILLER Striker/Midfield Matt is another player we have been trying to get to City for a few years. He last played Saturday football for Carlton Town before they folded and for Gedling Town. His work limited his ability to play Saturday football but he has been playing at a decent level on Sundays. He is working hard in matches and training to recapture his pace to go with his undoubtable strength and skill. It may take him a few more weeks to get there but we will certainly benefit when he does

JAMES HENDRY Forward
21 year old striker who starts his second season at City. A long suspension at the start of last season made it difficult for James to break into a successful side. However, to his great credit he stuck at it and once he gained his shirt on merit he made sure that he kept it. A quick aggressive player, he works hard for the side and upsets defenders, His goal scoring record is good with a goal every other game. However James will not be happy until it is a goal a game.

DAVID ISSOTT Midfield This is David's second full season with City. A tall strong midfield player who plays the game simply by winninh his tackles and passing the ball on. Although only 20 he has agreat understanding of the game and helps Tony with some of his coaching duties.
